In our world today, people seem to default to being unkind and selfish. The “what’s in it for me?” attitude is becoming more and more prevalent, and as a result we are growing apart from each other. Rarely do people do anything for the sake of kindness anymore, and when they do it’s a big enough deal that the event ends up in the news.
I think it’s about time for some introspection. Ask yourself, “When was the last time I did something for someone just to be kind?”
In the film Pay it Forward, a young man presents an idea on how to make the world a better place. His plan was to do something big for three people, and instead of asking for something in return, ask each of them to “Pay it Forward”. Each of those three people would then help three more people, and there would be a chain of events which would ultimately improve the world.
While this concept may seem a little far-fetched, I believe we should all adopt the attitude of “paying it forward”. I don’t necessarily think we should put a number to how many people we help, but the idea is a step in the right direction.
Imagine if we all went out of our way to help someone today. Imagine if we stopped to help someone change their tire, or talked to a stranger that seems like they’re having a bad day. Imagine if we offered a simple smile or a compliment to someone who feels insecure.
It’s not as difficult as you may think to change someone’s life. All it really takes is caring about someone and doing something about it. The sad thing is that less and less people are willing to offer support without being asked first.
My challenge to you is this: make a difference. It could be as simple as a kind word or a smile, or it could be something life-changing. Whatever it is, do it out of a desire to help others rather than yourself. If they comment on it, offer them the same challenge.
Guys, let’s change the world. It will start small, but if we don’t start we will never accomplish anything. Surely you can see the need for a change. Well it’s time to be that change. Take your eyes off your phone for five minutes and I guarantee you will see someone who could use a hug. You’ve had days like that, I know it. You’ve felt alone before. You’ve felt like nobody cared. Imagine if someone had reached out to you when you felt like that.
We can make a difference. Let’s do it. Let’s change the world.
