I’m so glad we live in a time when it’s so widely known that all people are equal to one another. This knowledge wasn’t always popular, and there are still people that resist this concept. Don’t worry, they’ll come around. These things just take time.
Regardless of a person’s gender, race, preferences, or other traits, we are all equal, and therefore deserve an equal chance in life. Nobody should ever be turned away or discriminated against.
With that out of the way, however, I’d like to present a viewpoint that is definitely less than orthodox. I just ask that you keep an open mind and understand what I’m saying here, because this is something that could be misunderstood rather easily.
We’re all equal, but that doesn’t mean we’re all the same. There are fundamental differences in character between all people, and some of those are influenced by our demographic (our age, gender, race, the amount of money we make, etc). The fact that these differences are here isn’t a bad thing. Quite the opposite, in fact. Our differences in character are part of what makes the diversity of the world such a wonderful thing.
Obviously, there is a problem in society with how we view each other. In general, we tend to focus more on the differences between us than anything. Whether we say it or not, the natural response in our brain is to view differences as bad. It’s not a conscious thought most of the time, but it is there. This response isn’t isolated to human beings, either.
Did you know that if a chick has a defect or discrepancy that makes it look different, the other chickens peck it to death? I don’t know why that is, but they see the difference and so they attack it. The sad thing is that we do the same thing, but on a psychological level.
I’d like to call for a change. Not as much a change in action (even though we need it), but a change of thought and a change of heart. We need to start viewing difference as the beautiful thing it is. We need to realize that just because everyone is equal, doesn’t mean everyone is the same. And that’s okay. Can you imagine how boring the world would be if nobody had any fundamental differences in character? I don’t know about you, but I would hate that.
Embrace who you are and who everyone else is. Don’t try to change others to fit your perception of how they should be, but rather encourage them to become their best self. Come on, guys, we can do this. We can move past the bias and the anger and the divisions in our society. We just have to start by wanting to.
Difference is not a bad thing, but it is there. Ignoring it will not make it go away, and trying to change it will only result in a division between us. The only reasonable solution is to embrace the differences and allow them to improve our relationships and interactions with others.
